The papers of Henry Wight Diman consist news articles, photographs, and official and personal correspondence and documents, agendas and journals, handbills, broadsides, and programs in both English and Portugese. Diman was born in Bristol, Rhode Island on April 2, 1835. Diman attended Brown University from 1851 to 1854. In 1861 Diman was appointed assistant paymaster on the gunboat U.S.S. Kineo, part of Admiral David Farragut's expedition against New Orleans. In 1862 he obtained the consular position in Oporto, Portugal and later in Lisbon until 1882. He died in Lisbon on September 23, 1884. Contains autograph appointment letters of Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant.

Henry Wight Diman (HWD) was born in Bristol, Rhode Island on April 2, 1835. The Dimans were an old and respected family in Bristol, with antecedents stretching back to 1730 and the arrival of Jeremiah Diman from Easthampton, Long Island. In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war".
